This is Why Coffee Reduces The Risk of Diabetes

Lower your risk of diabetes for the price of a cup of coffee. Black, of course. Apparently, that’s exactly what you can do. According to recent research, black coffee reduces the risk of diabetes.

Coffee is Already Good For You

The bioactive substance in coffee, Cafestol, is what is responsible for coffee’s preventative effects against diabetes. According to a study out of Denmark, Cafestol improves insulin sensitivity as well as overall cell function. This, in effect, delays the onset of diabetes.

This is not the first study to report the benefits of coffee, by the way. Another study out of the University of Southern California reported that coffee can extend the drinker’s life. This wasn’t a small study, either. The study included over 180,000 participants.

In fact, this new study isn’t the first to examine the relationship between diabetes and coffee either. Researchers already knew that coffee could reduce the risk of diabetes, but they did not know Cafestol played a role in this.

Cafestol Lowers Glucose and Improves Insulin Sensitivity

According to the study out of Denmark, which was published in the American Chemical Society Journal of Natural Products, a daily dose of Cafestol could lower the risk of diabetes.

In this particular study, the researchers used mice that are prone to diabetes. There were forty-seven mice in the study. The mice were separated into two groups. Both groups were fed a regular diet, but one group received a daily dose of Cafestol for 10 weeks and the other did not.

At the end of the study, the scientists tested for fasting glucose, glucagon, and insulin. They found that the group that received Cafestol had 28-30% lower fasting glucose levels than the other group.

Glucagon was 20% lower and insulin sensitivity increased by 42% in the treatment group. Overall, Cafestol seems to provide a preventative factor against diabetes.

While this study certainly points to some impressive data, be careful of your coffee consumption. Steer clear of sweeteners and flavored coffees, and opt for straight black coffee instead.
